Robinson, originally from Lincolnshire settled in Derby after serving in the
Army during the Second World War. It was in the early fifties when he started
working for farmers, spraying old curved Dutch barns with bitumen. This in turn
led to onsite repair of damaged sheeting and steelwork. It wasn't long before
his four sons were working along side him and his wife Evelyn was acting as
secretary. They now were fabricating steelwork for small extensions and then
new buildings. Offering a reliable, economic and professional service, it was
not long before word of mouth had given them an envious reputation in the local
area.
S.Robinson and Sons (Engineering) Ltd was formed in 1964 and they soon outgrew
their limited fabrication space as they continued to win new contracts, and
they moved to an Industrial Unit at Holcombe Street in Derby. Again, with hard
work came success, and they now had numerous contracts for industrial work, as
well as the original agricultural contracts.
To enable continued progress and expansion, a new three and a half acre green
field site was purchased in Wincanton Close, where we remain today. Of course
Robinsons have again achieved success, and the original three and a half acre
site has now grown in size to a site well over 20 acres. The fabrication
workshop has undergone many changes and is again subject to an expansion
programme costing over £3.5 million.

As the workshop has changed, so to has the type of structure that we build. Our
turnover is split approximately £18 million per year on industrial
buildings in the UK, £1 million per on export structures, and £2
million per year on Agricultural Buildings. This will increase over the next 5
years to £30 million per year turnover.
